Geotechnical & geo-environmental investigations throughout the UK

This usually commences with a Phase One desk study carried out to DEFRA/Environment Agency CLR11 requirements, to identify potential problems or limitations, from geological and historical records, together with site inspection, to determine the preliminary Conceptual Site Model and scope of investigation required. Planning conditions normally require Local Authority liaison prior to progressing to the Phase Two intrusive investigations.

The most appropriate investigation techniques can then be selected, bearing in mind the complexity and nature of the problems, and appropriate cost. We do not carry our own investigation equipment, and instead seek the most appropriate method and cost-effective contractor with complete independence.

Most investigations are undertaken as a combined geotechnical and geo-environmental assessment, making it more cost-effective, however we can tailor the interpretive technical report to suit. We have full capability to carry out geotechnical investigation and design reports to Eurocode EC7 requirements.

We offer full contaminated land investigation and risk assessment services, and routinely undertake detailed quantitative risk assessment modelling for human health and controlled waters receptors, leading where necessary to the design of a site-specific remediation strategy.

Full waste classification to TGWM2 and WAC (waste acceptance criteria) testing can also be carried out for off-site disposal of waste arisings. We routinely undertake supervision and validation of contamination remediation schemes , with Local Planning Authority/Environment Agency liaison as necessary.

Routine investigation methods include:

  • Trial pitting
  • Hand digging
  • Dynamic windowless sampling
  • Dynamic probing
  • Cable percussive borehole
  • Rotary open hole or core drilling
  • Soak away testing
  • Insitu plate bearing and CBR testing
  • Static cone testing
  • Geophysical surveying
  • Archaeologically -sensitive sites (experienced in working under the SMC licensing and 'Watching Brief' restrictions)

All works are carried out in general accordance with BS10175, BS5930, EC7 as necessary and to the standards expected by regulators such as the NHBC, the Local Authority and the Environment Agency.
